AIB's history goes back to 2001 when the RECS initiative was set up voluntarily by several energy companies. After working together closely, the AIB was raised as the body to control and operate the system behind the RECS. For every participating country an independent company was pointed out to fulfil the function of national issuing body (IB).
The AIB as an organisation functions completely seperate from RECS International. However, to enable communication between the system operators and system users (RECS International members) and to enhance the certificate market's functionality, joint meetings are held four times a year, often together with other stakeholders. Therefore the relationship between RECS International and AIB is very tight.
The AIB rules and guidelines are documented in the Principles and Rules of Operation (PRO). In addition, specific provisions relating to EECS Guarantees of Origin (Chapter 1)and the RECS certificates (Chapter 2) are documented.
